Lot tracking for cannabis and CBD brands on Shopify
Few categories are asked to prove provenance as often as cannabis and CBD. Every batch has lab results behind it, and the expectation is that any unit sold can be tied back to the specific batch those results describe.
The COA is only useful if it is attached to something
Certificates of analysis are the backbone of trust in this category. Every batch gets tested for potency and contaminants, and customers increasingly expect to see the result for the batch they actually received — not a representative sample from some earlier run.
That only works if your system knows which batch went into which order. Otherwise the best you can offer is the most recent COA and a hope that it matches.
Hold stock until the lab comes back
Product that has arrived but has not cleared testing should not be sellable. LotTrack treats that as a status rather than a note: stock pending QC or quarantined is excluded from fulfillment allocation, so it cannot be picked while results are outstanding.
Release is a single recorded action. If results come back partially problematic, the lot can be split so the affected quantity stays quarantined while the rest is released.

Traceability that holds up to scrutiny
Compliance expectations in this category change frequently and vary sharply by jurisdiction. What does not change is the underlying requirement to know what you received, what you did with it, and who you sold it to.

Can I tie each order to the COA for the batch it received?
Yes. Every fulfillment records the lot it drew from, and each lot carries a supplier reference identifying its production or harvest batch — the link back to the COA for that specific run.
Can I stop stock selling while lab results are pending?
Yes. Set the lot to pending QC or quarantined and it is excluded from allocation until released. If only part of a batch is affected, split the lot and quarantine just that portion.
